Description
Greece, Greek Orthodox, ca. 19th century. Wonderful old Greek triptych icon painted in gesso over carved wood. Scene features a central image of Mary and the baby Jesus in warm embrace. To the right side we see two scenes in a stacked panel with Saint Dimitrios below, killing Bulgarian Czar Kaloyan. Above is Saint John the Merciful. On the left side is a panel with Saint George and the Dragon at the base; Saint Nicholas of Myra above. At the top of the triptych are two angels and Greek Orthodox cross in golden-hued paint. When the icon is closed, you can see a cross with The inscription IC XC NIKA - translated as "Jesus Christ is Victorious." Size when closed: 7.5" W x 9.5" H (19 cm x 24.1 cm); Size when open: 15" W x 9.5" H (38.1 cm x 24.1 cm)
