Description
Central Asia, India, Uttar Pradesh, later Gupta Period, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A wonderful early sandstone wall decoration - from a temple, palace, or other important building - depicting the dancing Hindu god, Lord Ganesha (Ganesh). Ganesha, the elephant-headed patron of arts and sciences, revered for his intellect and wisdom, is wonderfully displayed here. His head faces the viewer, a decorative crown hanging down onto his broad forehead, meeting his third eye. His human-like body, with his large belly, is also well-carved - a feature of the god's depiction that first appeared in the Gupta Period. He holds a bowl of sweets, one of his traditional attributes. At his feet, he probably once had carved his vahana (mount), typically a mouse. Size: 3.9" W x 5.55" H (9.9 cm x 14.1 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
