Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely traveling brass icon with a central panel depicting the Mother of God flanked by side panels depicting scenes from the Life of Mary and the Life of Christ. The central image is a version of the Virgin Hodegetria ("She who shows the way") depicting the Mother of God holding the Christ Child in one arm, as he makes a blessing gesture. Above in the central onion dome is God the Father, and two saints are in the side half domes. Icons served as an easily transportable method for traveling priests to teach the stories that made up the foundation of Orthodox Christianity. Size: 4.25" L x 3" W (10.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
