Description
1689 1st ed Reflections on English Civil War anti-Papist King James Protestant
A rare late 17th-century report on the English Civil War from the end of 1688 through 1689. Attributed to Edward Stephens by Wing, this pamphlet delivers and discusses many of the causes and circumstances revolving around the English Civil War. Stephens makes claims about what will bring about deliverance from the war including mercy and favor from God in heaven, as well as the death of King James. Other important topics include descriptions of the King’s Council, laws and Acts of the Conventions such as the Order for Thanksgiving.
This pamphlet was written with some anti-Papist propaganda. For instance, Stephens states that
“There were English Protestants enough in Ireland, to have defended themselves, and secured that Kingdom, had they not been disarmed, and their Arms contrary to Law, put into the hands of Papists.” (p.9)
