Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) Mercury fall's in love with Herse Engraving 7.40 x10.40 inch. Mercury catches sight of Herse amongst the procession in honour of the festival of Athena and is immediately smitten with love for her. A first state with the number 17 bottom left, before the second number 37 at right, and before the burnishing of all numbers in later states. An early work drawn by Goltzius en engraved in his workshop. Print from the third series of scenes from the Metamorphoses whose design occupied Goltzius about 1589. Goltzius made the drawings as designs for the prints. He probably also surveyed the engraving process by a member of his workshop and was involved in the publishing of the series.
