c. 1790 Superb Antislavery Token “Am I Not A Man And A Brother - May Slavery & Oppression Cease Throughout The World.”
c. 1790 Anti-Slavery Token. “Am I Not A Man And A Brother.” Lettered Edge. Copper. Shackled and Chained male Negro Slave on his knees Pleading. English. Dalton & Hammer Middlesex-1037B. Superb Gem Mint State.
This historic, Black History and Slavery related British Copper token measures about 1.25” in diameter (29 mm) and has a Lettered Edge reading: “Payable At Dublin Or London.” The detail is excellent due to its superb sharp strike. There are no defects or detractions and the medium brown surfaces have an attractive original reflective satiny gloss with traces of bright mint red luster within and about the lettering and devices. A superb quality example of this major type displaying a shackled and chained male Slave on his knees pleading, with the reverse design of clasp hands of brotherly friendship. The reverse side legend reading: “May Slavery & Oppression Cease Throughout The World.” A magnificent, perfectly struck satiny specimen, and by far the very finest we have offered.
