Item Details
Description
Probably English, this example is from a group which Norman dates c.1635-80. They were worn from a sling over the shoulder or waist belt and carried for settling disputes among men of the privileged class as well as personal defense. Its 27" blade is well figured at the forte and flattened diamond section for the balance. The iron hilt is finely overlaid in silver foliate designs with each element mounting an inset silver panel which could be monogrammed or engraved with a witty phrase. Silver encrustation in this manner was especially popular in England during the period. The grip is wrapped with silver wire. The agility gained by its light stature made it an extremely lethal weapon in the hands of a skilled swordsman.
