American Revolution
1780 Revolutionary War Map Engraved by William Faden
1780-Dated Revolutionary War, Hand-Colored Map entitled, “Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army Under His Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Swords House on Hudson's River Near Stillwater...,” Drawn by W.C. Wilkinson, Engraved by William Faden, Choice Extremely Fine.
This Hand-Colored Map is of the two Revolutionary War battles at Saratoga, fought in September and October of 1777. The two battles were fought 19 days apart, and the interesting overlay at top right shows the before/after positions of the first battle. This Map is fully titled “Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army Under His Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Swords House on Hudson's River Near Stillwater on Sept. 17th with the Positions of that part of the Army engaged on the 19th Sept. 1777” is removed from John Burgoyne’s “A State of the Expedition from Canada,” published in London in 1780.

Faden's maps of the American Revolution are particularly well presented because he based them on manuscript maps supplied to him from the war zone. This Map was drawn by W.C. Wilkinson, Lt. 62nd Regt and engraved by William Faden. It measures approximately 15.25” x 14” which is a large size with original outer printing plate embossed edges still seen impressed within the period laid paper. Some of the major battle line positions have been Hand-Color outlined in red, orange and blue. This detailed and uncommon battle plan shows the placement of British and American forces during the Battle of Saratoga in September and October of 1777. Some slight tone along two folds creating a 6" section of minor weakness which has been reinforced upon the blank verso with early archival tape. There is a short 0.75" binding tear and a small edge tear confined to the lower blank margin which have both been archivally closed. An important original Battle Map of the American Revolutionary War.
