The plate volumes include 5 unnumbered plates (including portraits? of Buffon and Daubenton), 2 folding maps, and 1 folding table, plus 734 plates (many hand-colored) numbered 1-7, 1-16, 1-7, 1-26,1-467 (with plate 324 misnumbered as an additional no. 323), and 1-190. Some plates are in 2 or 3 parts, and some irregularly numbered. (8vo), 23.5x15 cm. (9¼x6"), uniform period half calf and marbled boards, gilt decorated spine with black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers.
Important set of the natural history works of the famed French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedic author. The present edition is notable for the many dissections and skeletal depictions in addition to the hand-colored plates of the subjects animals. Despite some irregular numbering and the fact that the numbers called for are inconsistent, the plates appear complete. Sold as is.
