    1680 London, Printed by J.M. for Henry Herringman, at the Sign of the Blue Anchor in the Lower Walk of the New Exchange. 1680
  • Book Condition: Very Good+. Strongly bound in later calf boards, no tears, light age toning, complete, with Engraved Portrait of Cowley on frontispiece by W. Faithorne. Various works separately paginated.
  • Abraham Cowley (1618-1667), English metaphysical poet. Published first volume of verse, Poetical Blossoms in 1633, when he was 15. While a student at Cambridge, Cowley wrote three plays and began the scriptural epic Davideis (1656). Due to the Puritan uprising left Cambridge, and in 1656 went to France, where served as secretary and royalist agent for Queen Henrietta Maria.
  • Cowley main works: The Mistress (1647), a love cycle in John Donne manner; Poems (1656); Verses on Several Occasions (1663), prose tract Proposition for the Advancement of Experimental Philosophy (1661). (The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. 2014).
