Description
Scarce map offers a wonderful snapshot of this secessionist state shortly following the outbreak of the American Civil War. Sharp example of the first Johnson & Ward map of Florida. The Johnson Family Atlas had previously been published by Johnson & Browning--Johnson & Ward took over the business right after the beginning of the Civil War. Most likely based on U.S. Land Survey charts commissioned in the mid-1850s. References American Indian tribes and forts and battles sites related to the Seminole Wars. Notes Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades, the Indian Hunting Grounds, Biscayne Bay, Tampa Bay and the Okefenokee Swamp. Shows the course of a proposed canal route leading from Tampa to the Atlantic. Great hand-coloring by county. Shows canals, railroads, forts, swamp lands, etc. Includes inset of Plan of the Florida Keys. From Johnson & Ward 1862 New Illustrated Steel Plate Family Atlas. Great color with nice impression. Wide margins. Small light spot in image. Light stains at edge and corner. 12.5 x 15.5.
