Description
An Important American Folk Art Embroidered Mourning Picture, probably Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1814
Marks: ELIZA C. TICE, 1814
21 inches high x 25-1/2 inches wide (53.3 x 64.8 cm) (sight, work)
31 inches high x 35-3/4 inches wide (framed)
Work comprised of embroidery on gouache depicting a widow and boy beneath a weeping willow tree, figures standing beside plinth and monogrammed urn, plinth inset with cartouche reading Memory of an Affectionate Cousin, figure positioned next to shoreline with boat to center channel, cottage to left foreground, work framed by ebonized and partial gilt eglomisé border with lower center reading ELIZA C. TICE, 1814.
While little information is known about Eliza, she appears to have been enrolled in formal education at the creation of this work. The Juvenile Port-folio and Literary Miscellany volume, Thomas G. Condie, Jr., Philadelphia, 1814 printing, lists Eliza as a subscriber. She may be related to Jacob Alter, who married an Eliza Tice (b. 1806), a native of Washington County, Maryland, in 1819.
