Description
A pair of Ashanti brass weights for weighing gold, 18th - 19th Century, one in the form of a mask and the other representing the 'electric fish', which was believed to symbolize royalty and royal power. The weights are manufactured using the 'lost wax' method and were made during the period the Ashanti's economy was growing, mainly due to war, conquest, booty and trade. The colonial administration in the region banned the use of gold dust as currency in 1894 and forbid the use and manufacture of these weights in 1896. L: 42 x 33 mm and 53 x 27 mm.
