Item Details
Description
mid-19th century, both works oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, each depicts a nervy colonial engaged in mortal combat with an angry wild animal. Presented in carved and ebonized frames with gilt and silk liners from D. Matt, Inc., of New York, NY.
SS 4 5/8 x 6 5/8 in.; DOA 9.5 x 11.5 in.
These rare scenes are derived from folio engravings originally published by Thomas Williamson and Samuel Howitt in Oriental Field Sports (London, 1807). This hugely popular collection not only introduced upperclass British audiences to India's exotic wildlife, but amply illustrated the subcontinent's potential for providing thrills and adventure via the most dangerous of bloodsports.
Berry-Hill Galleries, Inc., New York, NY
From The Collection of the Late Dred Stuart Walston and Doris Schaum Walston of Wilson, North Carolina
