Description
**First Time At Auction**
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd century CE. A fine earthenware visage of a female, seemingly mold-pressed but with hand modeled and incised details as well. Note the meticulously delineated, centrally parted hairdo, that penetrating stare from her wide open eyes, her naturalistic nose, and slightly parted lips. Although this piece would have been brightly painted, it persists as a lovely rendering with traces of russet pigment remaining. Size: 3.25" H (8.3 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: acquired from England in 1965; purportedly excavated at Aldborogh, Yorkshire, about 1960. Aldborough was the center of the Romanized Brigantes, the largest tribe in Britain in that period.
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
