**First Time At Auction**
Western Greece, Archaic Greece, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A pottery bust of a woman - probably a goddess - with flowing hair and veil and a realistic and meditative face. The protome is a type of bust made by pressing a thin layer of terracotta into a single mold. Used as adornments on utensils or works of art, they were created in a frontal view form. These were first made in Rhodes, but from the early fifth century BCE onwards they spread throughout Greece. Upon its original creation, this piece would have been painted in layers of bright and vibrant pigments. Size: 3.375" W x 4.25" H (8.6 cm x 10.8 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) on included custom stand.
