Description
A-076 Rare grouping of U.S. WWII 5th Marine Division member Corporal Edward S. Mozuck, who enlisted in 1942 and later was trained as a "paramarine". He served on Bougainville and took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima where he was killed in action. This collection of items includes: (1) A scrapbook documenting Mozuck's career. With photos of training, South Sea Island natives, comrades (many named), newspaper clippings, telegrams, paramarine training, ephemera items, etc. (2) U.S.M.C. red piped blue dress tunic. Gilt eagle/anchor buttons. PFC chevrons. Excellent. (3) U.S.M.C. green service tunic (dated "1943") with Corporal chevrons and theater made paratrooper shoulder insignia - with a red cloth border. Excellent. (4) Two peaked cap covers - white and red piped blue. (5) Two white dress cloth belts with gilt buckles, one for the tunic and the other a waist belt - in a period box. (6) Large portrait photo of Mozuck in a domed glass, silvered gesso wood patriotic frame. 19 3/4" x 12 1/4". (7) U.S.M.C. Parachute School Certificate of Profiency awarded to Mozuck. With U.S. parachute wings and the rare 2 3/4" Marine Corps para wings. Age darkened parachute on the center of wings with "berries". A good amount of gilt still remains. Pin-back. Marked "AMICO" and "STERLING...". (8) U.S.M.C. collar and cap EGA and two Philippine Congressional Ribbons, one with a star. (9) Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Victory Medal. (10) Original Purple Heart Certificate awarded to "Corporal Edward S. Mozuck, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves" for wounds received in action "resulting in his death February 22, 1945". Ink signed by the Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal. With a letter to Mozuck's parents stating entitlement to the Purple Heart and enclosed Certificate. Also "The American Legion Gold Star Citation" dated "May 12, 1946". (11) "The Spearhead... 5th Marine Division" by Howard M. Conner. Published in 1950. Includes a history with photographs and unit rosters, casualties, KIAs (including Edward S. Mozuck) and awards/decorations. Cover is loose. II
