Additional Information: This original pastel is hand signed by the artist at the lower right part "Landau". It was painted in 1950. It is dated on the left and inscribed "Jerusalem".
Condition: Excellent Condition.

Coming from a family of rabbis, Zygmunt Landau studies with the painter Henri Epstein at the drawing school of Jakub Kacenbogen in Lodz. He then enrols in the Academy of Fine Arts of Warsaw in the studio of Stanislas Lentz. At the age of 18, he teaches painting. He arrives in Paris and settles down at the Ruche (“the hive”), spends some time at the Grande Chaumière, the Colarossi Academy and becomes friends with Kisling. Admirer of Cezanne, he hangs out in the Parisian museums.
In 1928, he goes back to Poland to show his paintings in Warsaw and in Lodz. His work is equally acclaimed in the United Kingdom and in the United States thanks to the British painter and critic Roger Fry with who he will share a flat in Saint-Tropez. He illustrates Listen Israel by Edmond Fleg published before the Second World War by La Cigogne editions.
In September 1939, he hides in Saint-Tropez.
After the war, Zygmunt Landau lives in Saint-Tropez, Nice and Paris where he shows his paintings regularly as well as in London and in Stockholm. Towards the end of the 50’s, he settles down in Israel and continues painting.
In 1962, he makes stain-glass windows for the little chapel of the Y.M.C.A in Tiberiade, his last work.
