Description
AN EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST WITH LIFE SCENES, MSTERA, CIRCA 1880. Finely painted in the miniature technique, John the Forerunner is shown at center with wings. The wings derived from the double meaning of the Greek word "angelos", which means both messenger (see Mark 1:2) and angel. He holds a salvar with his head and a scroll inscribed 'Repent ye: for the Kingdom Heaven is at hand". He is surrounded with various "life scenes" including "The Birth of St. John", "An Angel leads the child John into the wildnerness", "The Beheading of St. John", and the "Finding of the Head of St. John". Christ delivers a blessing at top center. The inscription on the top margin identifies the subject as "The Holy Prophet John the Forerunner". Of the highest quality and in excellent condition. 12.25 inches x 10 inches.
