Description
This woodblock depicts a well-traveled road, lined with houses and businesses, and a curious ox in the roadway, with a peasant nearby carrying a load. This shin hanga print is a classic in the transition to a more modern woodblock design, very pleasing to the eye. It is signed with Kotozuka Eiichi's cipher, and the Uchida publisher logos in the upper left corner. This print is in superb condition, with the usual paper residue on the rear corners from tipping in a folder.
Kotozuka Eiichi (1906-1979) was a Japanese painter and printmaker who studied at the Kyoto School. He was part of a group that was more open to the sosaku hanga art movement which meant that the prints they produced were self-made, self-cut, and self-printed.
