Description

Age: 20 century

Description: A reddish-brown Chinese Yixing 'purple' stoneware teapot and lid. Bamboo-shaped with relief applied and carved bamboo leaves to the lid, as well as bamboo-shape handles and spout. Archaicized incised calligraphic characters to one side and elegant cursive inscription to verso. Base impressed with 4 character seal type mark and inner lid impressed with seal-type mark. Soft use-related surface patina overall.

Size: 6 1/2", 16.5 cm.

Provenance: From the Jennings Collection, Asheville, North Carolina. Acquired over a ten-year span.

Condition

Lot 234: Approx. 25 % of the foot ring to the underside has been broken and lost. There are small chips to the interior and exterior of the spout. The underside of the lid has significant chips along on edge and some flea bites along the other. The handle appears undamaged. The hole, with staining and discoloration from use.
