WINSLOW WILLIAMS (AMERICAN, 20TH CENTURY) PAINTING, egg tempera on Masonite, a whimsical depiction of artist at easel in Renaissance attire, signed and dated "Winslow Williams 1941", retains an old label attached verso for a 1945 exhibition at the "Virginia Museum" in Richmond giving artist's name, address, and title of "Botticelli". Housed in possibly original frame. Together with a watercolor and gouache preparatory sketch of the same scene by the artist, signed and dated "W. W. '41", matted and housed under glass in an old frame. Two pieces total. 1941. 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" and 10" x 13" sight, 14 5/8" x 17 1/2" and 18 3/4" x 20 3/4" OA.

Catalogue Note: A Virginia native, Winslow Williams was a graduate of the Yale Art School and worked as an illustrator at the University during the 1950's, where he was responsible, primarily, for illustrating football programs. The present painting, executed in the artist's distinctive style, was exhibited at a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts show in 1945. It is unclear, however, whether Williams's painting received any recognition at the event.
