Finely bound in three-quarter blue polished calf by Bayntun, with five raised bands to the spine, floral decorations to the spine compartments, contrasting maroon title label lettered in gilt to the spine, boards ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, with the publisher's green cloth bound into the rear of the text. About very good, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, hinges repaired and reinforced, some toning and light rubbing to the spine, minor soiling to the front board, former owner's bookplates to the pastedowns, bright interior with clean plates lacking the usual toning and spotting. Overall, an attractive and presentably copy. Smith I, 8. Dombey and Son was originally published serially in twenty parts issued in nineteen monthly installments from October 1846 - April 1848. The earliest first editions in book form were bound from the publisher's parts. Dickens serial bibliographers Hatton and Cleaver note "Two typographical errors, which have a bearing on priority of issue," referring to two specific points that are of the "earliest issue:" the misprint "Capatin" for "Captain" on page 324 and the omission of "if" on page 426. Indeed, these two issue points were corrected so early that Smith cites them as points found "in some copies" rather than all copies of the first book edition. This copy has the two earliest issue points called for by Hatton and Cleaver as well as all but one of the issue points called for by Smith, which, along with the stab holes present on the page edges, indicates that this copy was bound from the publisher's parts. Additionally, this copy contains the earliest two-line errata slip (later expanded) as well as a twelve line slip that "originally preceded the plates in Part 5 of the monthly issue." Dombey and Son is a novel about the wealthy Dombey family who owns the titular shipping company Dombey and Son. The text follows Paul Dombey, Sr., who has high hopes for his sickly son, Paul, as a future business partner, and neglects his healthy daughter, Florence. Throughout the text, Dickens explores the relationship between one's personal and professional lives as well as the relationship between parent and child. Considered the text that solidified his reputation as a renowned author, Dombey and Son is regarded as Dickens' first artistically mature work, with carefully plotted serial installments and a preplanned outline for the entire work. Dickens wrote this book in various locations including Switzerland, England, and France. Dombey and Son contains 40 illustrations by Browne, published and signed under the pseudonym Phiz, including two plates that were etched as well as drawn by the illustrator. Dombey and Son marked a successful experiment in new illustration techniques; it contains the first published example of a "dark plate," appropriately titled "On the Dark Road" (page 547), "which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast." Additionally, Dombey and Son is the first example of Browne's horizontal illustrations for Dickens' novels. He would continue to use both of these techniques in Dickens' next novel, David Copperfield.
