First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark green cloth and lime green paper boards, lettered in silver, pink top stain; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Ilonka Karasz, illustrated with a farm landscape drawing, lettered in black. Near fine, with a few very faint spots to the endpapers, some very minor soiling to the front board; unclipped dust jacket, with a small closed tear to the top edge of the rear panel, two tiny nicks to the edges, a few faint spots to the flaps and jacket verso. Overall, a near fine and very attractive copy of Updike's fourth novel. On the Farm is a short novel that tells the story of a young Manhattan businessman as he visits his aging mother on her unkempt farm. Like several of Updike's works, is set in rural southeastern Pennsylvania. As he explains in his 1968 interview with The Paris Review, "I am drawn to southeastern Pennsylvania because I know how things happen there, or at least how they used to happen. Once you have in your bones the fundamental feasibilities of a place, you can imagine there freely."
