Frederick Stewart Butler (1849 - 1918) Oil on canvas of a fox hunting scene. Signed and dated (1904) lower right. Sight Size: 15.5 x 21 in. Born in NYC in 1849. Joining the Gold Rush, the Butler family sailed to California in 1849. Frederick's father, Miner F. Butler, was the architect for the Capitol in Sacramento. The younger Butler's favorite painting locales in northern California included Russian River, Rio Vista, and the hills of Sonoma County. He died in Alameda County, CA on Aug. 30, 1918. Exh: Calif. State Fair, 1859; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1865 (medal); San Francisco Art Association, 1873; Bohemian Club 1898, 1900; Berkeley AA, 1908.
