Description
East Asia, Japan, late Meiji Period, ca. early 20th century CE. A highly-detailed toffee-hued boxwood netsuke depicting a female pig. Miniscule black glass beads form the eyes of the head which displays an elongated snout, flapped ears, and stylized wrinkles, all above two thin hooved legs. The animal has a bulbous body and curved tail and large udders, presumably from after giving birth. The two back feet are curled up underneath its hind quarters, with two drilled perforations holes. A small disc with a signature is missing, but the carved slot for it is visible. Size: 2" L (5.1 cm).
