This is the recovered first edition of Thomas Taylor's 1817 self-publication, printed by A. J. Valpy, of "Select Works of Plotinus, The Great Restorer of the Philosophy of Plato: and extracts from the Treatise of Synesius on Providence, Translated from the Greek, With an Introduction Containing The Substance of Porphyry's life of Plotinus" (600 pages), translated from the Greek by Taylor. This has been recovered by the Manchester bookbinder/seller John Heywood, as indicated by his stamp toward the bottom of an otherwise blank front end page. The cover, brown leather spine with five raised bands, textured brown boards, gilt lettering and decoration, is in good condition, with scuffs to the sides of the spine, spots of surface material missing from the spine, scuffs and shallow bumps to the outside corners, and light scuffs to the boards, but with no significant tears. There is a sunned line across the top and outside borders of the back cover. The spine is straight and securely attached, as are the front and back boards. The binding is secure throughout the book, with no loose or missing pages. There are no page tears and few creases. The only stamp is that of the bookbinder. There are no written notations. There is sunning to a number of pages and occasional foxing, but no substantial stains, and no stains of any kind to most pages. All the lettering is unfaded and legible.
