Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A steelyard (statera) balance consisting of a rectangular beam with conical terminals, a hanging chain ending in a large hook, a hook suspended from a loop on the beam, and two other loops for attachment with the short remains of chains attached to them. The face of the beam is sectioned using incised Roman numerals to mark the weight. Comes displayed on a custom stand in the position it would have been used. Size: 11.25" L x 12.25" H (28.6 cm x 31.1 cm); height on stand: 13.55" (34.4 cm).
Steelyard balances were used to weigh loads by moving a counterweight along the beam until it balanced and then reading the incised numeral. Vitruvius describes them and their function in his De Architectura, Book X, 3-4.
