Description
Roman Period, 30 BC-323 AD. A lead discoid seal impression with high-relief image of a standing god Harpokrates with his finger to his mouth. 16 grams, 29mm (1 1/4"). Property of a European collector; acquired Europe, 1980s-1990s. Harpocrates (Harpokrates) was the god of silence, secrets and confidentiality in the Hellenistic pantheon of Ptolemaic Alexandria. He was also an embodiment of hope, according to Plutarch. Harpocrates was adapted by the Greeks from the Egyptian child- god Horus. His named is derived from Egyptian Har-pa-khered or Heru-pa-khered Horus the Child. Traditionally Horus represented the newborn sun, rising each day at dawn. When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, the Egyptian Horus was developed into the Hellenistic god known as Harpokrates. The gesture of the finger pressed to the chin with the forefinger beneath the lips, which in Egypt signified childhood, was interpreted by the Greeks as a forefinger pressed to the lips, symbolising silence.
