Description
**First Time At Auction**
Africa, Ethiopia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large and finely-detailed Bible scene of the Annunciation, with all non-wood scenes carved from limestone. The Annunciation is the moment where the angel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary proclaiming that she will be the bearer of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The central carved scene depicts the angel Gabriel, shown holding a flower in one hand and pointing upwards with two extended fingers of the other, as the Virgin Mother kneels with her hands clasped over her heart and her head bowed in reverence. Above the central image is a carved image of God the Father, shown on an onion-dome form, with open arms and a gentle face behind a multi-rayed corona. The base displays two carved Seraphim flanking a carved Biblical tome-shaped description, presumably of the scene above. The backside features two carved crucifixes, one in a cross form and the other in a more-intricate diamond form. Intricate carvings detail the remaining surfaces. Size: 4.125" L x 12" W x 20.125" H (10.5 cm x 30.5 cm x 51.1 cm).
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection
