Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
China, Warring States Period, 475 to 221 BCE. A stunning bronze hanging ring with a mask-shaped holder, possibly a door knocker. The bronze is recognizable as Chinese bronze from this period by its high tin content, which gives its patina that bluish color rather than the green common from other parts of the world. The mask is in the form of some kind of bird, possibly a Fenghuang, sometimes known as the August Rooster or the Chinese Phoenix. Looming eyes look down over a sharp, short beak; curls reminiscent of long feathers extend from the eyelids and flow up over each eye. Bronze cast into feathered shapes forms the rest of the squared-off face; the bronze ring is simple and thick. The fenghuang is a symbol of unity and has very positive connotations; it is also associated with the royal house. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4" W x 6.9" H (10.2 cm x 17.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-Private New Orleans Collection, acquired more than 25 years ago
