**First Time At Auction**
Thailand, ca. 1960s CE. A fine niello inlay sterling silver box with a burled wood interior presenting a Buddhist theme. The hinged cover features a depiction of the Royal Barge on the Chao Phraya River floating before Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) in the central diamond motif with four apsara figures set in the surrounding corners. The front section has an inscription that reads āTo Admiral Sir David Luce with best wishes from Admiral (signed) Chammarnand Layndvla, Bangkok, 5, January 1962ā. Since Sir David Luce was the appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Far East who was promoted to the First Sea Lord in 1963, perhaps this box was a diplomatic going away gift. The underside is a stamped with a "Thainakon Sterling Thailand" hallmark. Size: 4.375" L x 7.5" W x 1.875" H (11.1 cm x 19 cm x 4.8 cm) Total weight: 17.1 ounces or 484.8 grams
