Central Asia, Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Civilization), ca. 3000 BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown bichrome pottery vessel with gently curved walls on a diminutive foot, its walls adorned with a pair of lions surrounded by one solid and one striped spade-shaped leaves. Abstract geometric designs detail the spaces around both flora and fauna, and four-barred linear borders separate the detailed panels from one another. The Indus Valley Civilization covered a wide geographic region, from northeast Afghanistan to Pakistan and northwest India, in the basin of the Indus River; key associated sites are the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Size: 4.5" W x 2.95" H (11.4 cm x 7.5 cm).
