Central Asia, Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Civilization), ca. 3000 BCE. A lovely bichrome pottery vessel with gently curved walls on a diminutive foot, its walls adorned with animals of the land and sea - one panel featuring a regal lion sitting in profile, another with a large fish, possibly a shark, swimming amidst seaweed or a rocky region of the seafloor, as well as a third panel with a spade-like abstract form containing diagonal striations, and various linear and stylized geometric motifs in the field - all in dark brown/black on a tan ground. This piece was wheel-made, one of the many innovations of this civilization. The Indus Valley Civilization covered a wide geographic region, from northeast Afghanistan to Pakistan and northwest India, in the basin of the Indus River; key associated sites are the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
