Description
This woodblock print is from Hokusai's most famous Series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. This print is number 3 in the series, and depicts Mount Fuji with lightning bolts dancing in a shower over the summit. Hokusai created the "Thirty-Six Views" both as a response to a domestic travel boom and as part of a personal obsession with Mount Fuji.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the internationally iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820's.
