Description
Rare Sea Green plaque made at Rookwood in 1894 by Albert Valentien. Pictured is a single barn swallow in flight nearing a willow branch. Marks on the edges of the plaque include four impressed Rookwood logos with flames indicating 1894, each accompanied by Joseph Bailey's crescent moon incised nearby. Valentien has also incised his initials on the right hand edge. On the left hand edge is found an incised Roman numeral II which most likely indicates this to be part of a larger installation but what we have is nicely finished and complete in itself. Size is 10 1/8 by 8 inches. Fine overall crazing, some shallow scratches, a pin head size open bubble and a glazed over chip on the lower right hand corner. The back of the tile is fluted vertically perhaps indicating that it was intended to be cemented to a wall. Obviously this did not happen. Nice composition and great detail.
