James McCray
(California, 1912-1993)
Modern landscape drawing by James McCray.
James McCray was an important figure in the development of the modern art scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. McCray studied at the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania after receiving his Master in Fine Arts from the University of California, Berkeley.
McCray taught art at UC Berkeley (1935-40, 1947-80), California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco) (1940-46), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1941-43), and Santa Barbara College (1951).
He exhibited his works at Oakland Art Gallery, 1934; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; San Francisco Art Association, 1939; California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1945, 1948, 1950; the Art Institute of Chicago, 1947, 1948; University of New Mexico, 1949 (solo); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 1950; Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1952; the Whitney Museum of Art, 1951; California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco), 1955 (solo).
