Description
A late Victorian silver cigarette case, of oblong form with embossed gadrooned decoration to the canted edges, hallmarked Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings (Frank) Shepherd, Birmingham 1886, width measures 3 2/8 inches (8.3 cm). Together with a modern silver mounted scent bottle with cut-glass circular body, the embossed hinged cover opening to reveal a glass stopper, hallmarked M M H, Birmingham 1996. Gross weight 3.2 ozt (99.8 grams). (2).
Condition
In good overall condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The cigarette case has remnants of polish visible, the hinges appear loose with some sideways movement, requires attention, the case shuts closes properly but not fully flush, opening to reveal two elastic bands. The hinged cover is not securely attached to the body and lifts off easily, the glass stopper is probably not original to the piece appears slightly small, minor chips and nibbles to the cut-glass body. Maker's mark on the cigarette case slightly rubbed, other hallmarks clear and legible.
