Description
Kiener, Louis Charles
III. Rocher, triton, ranelle. Mit 80 handkolorierten Tafeln von Maubert, Roch, De la Haye und Anderen. Titelei, 219 S., (131 S., 47 Tafeln (rocher), 48 S., 18 Tafeln (triton), 40 S., 15 Tafeln (ranelle)). Folio. HLwd. mit RVergoldung und Marmorpapier (etwas berieben).
With 80 handcoloured plates by Maubert, Roch, de la Haye and others. Halfcloth with spine gilding and marbled paper. (slightly rubbed). - A very rare large-paper edition of this beautifully executed work of great scientific (taxonomical and nomenclatural) importance containing the descriptions and illustrations of many new and poorly-known shells. The larger quarto edition better suits the fine illustrations, as this work was meant to be of a scientific and aesthetic value. Nissen only mentions the 8vo edition, but on original wrappers from Kiener's time the work was stated to be available in "Grand in-8°, papier grand-raisin...figures coloriées. 6 fr.", AND "Grand in-4°, papier vélin satiné, figures coloriées 12 fr", i.e. twice as expensive. Louis Charles Kiener (1799-1881) made use of the famous Delessert collection and that of the Natural History Museum of Paris, the largest and most varied repositories of conchological material on the continent. - Continously slightly brownstained. - Rare and fine edition of this magnificient work.
Caprotti, 197, Dance, 137, Faber, 64-65, Nissen ZBI, 2183. "He soon put it to good use, and in 1834 he published the first part of his "Spécies"... This exquisitely illustrated iconography, started before the Sowerbys and Reeve began to issue theirs, appeared at intervals up to 1880, when eleven volumes had been completed" (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting). - Durchgehend etwas braunfleckig. Seltene und eindrucksvolle Ausgabe mit schönen Tafeln.
