Canadian 1821 Needlework Sampler Catharine Ann Langford
Item Details
Description
A very fine needlework sampler by Catharine Ann Langford, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, dated December 20th, 1821. Catharine did this while at the National School in Halifax. The sampler includes a pleasant secular verse ("Teach me to feel another's woe, And hide the faults I see. The Mercy I to other shew (show) That Mercy shew to me."), several large flowering trees and urns, stars, crowns and 2 small dogs. There is a strawberry vine border. Colors include green, black, brown, white and rose (only the rose has faded, as can be seen in the strawberries around the edge. The sampler measures 12 ½" x 15 ½" and is framed in a period, if not original frame. Condition is fine to very fine. Stitching is complete and tidy, the colors (except for the rose) have held up well and there are no rips or tears in the linen. There is a light stain in the lower right, about 1" square, some very light soiling in the upper right corner and a very small hole on the left margin about the mid-point of the sampler (pear-shaped, about 18" x 1/8"), confined to outside the strawberry and vine border (visible as a white spot in a couple of the photos). Marked Canadian samplers are rare and desirable. Because this sampler names the National School, it is especially important. The National School in Halifax was founded around 1815 and educated (primarily) orphan girls by teaching them to be domestic servants, etc. I was not able to find any genealogy on Catharine, explainable by the fact that she was probably an orphan.
