Roman Empire, Imperial Period, North Africa, ca. 4th century CE. A lovely mold-made terracotta oil lamp of a classic Roman North African red-slipped style. These oil lamps are distinguished by their long bodies and stamped, low-relief designs. This example features a portrait of a garbed man, perhaps a high-ranking individual of the North African Roman settlements. The man is flanked by two curved olive branches as well as two small fill holes, and rests above a wide neck channel which leads to a large wick spout. A pierced tab-shaped handle sits above the visage and leads to a concave spoon-shaped base, and the base has an interesting incised curvilinear design above it. Attractive and robust! Size: 5.5" L x 3.5" W x 2" H (14 cm x 8.9 cm x 5.1 cm).
