Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A lovely mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a concentric circle base and a planta pedis (maker's mark), rounded walls, ovalo-variant shoulders, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, and an ovoid wick spout. An intricate depiction of a grasshopper adorns the tondo - bearing pronounced insectile features like bent hind legs, a segmented body, a singular large eye, and sinuous antennae - amongst a field of berries and acanthus leaves. The neck channel is decorated with stylized Corinthian capital volutes. Size: 2.875" W x 0.7" H (7.3 cm x 1.8 cm).
