Description
Peters and Reed Arts & Crafts bowl c. 1920 with raised florals, designed by Frank Ferrel, in the highly desirable Persian Ware Dark Blue semi matte glaze. This gorgeous arts-and-crafts piece has a deep, matte blue glaze that has a degree of iridescence and black peppering in the glaze. The Mission-style motif is a raised design of leaves, branches and berries encircling the bowl. This bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, no cracks, there are a few small glaze glaze pops and drips, glaze pinholes inside the bowl, as is almost always found in these bowls. Stilt marks visible on the bottom. This piece most likely dates to the early 1920's. Measures 8-1/2" wide at the shoulder, 3-1/4" tall, and 6" wide at the rim opening. Weight 2 pd 14 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Collection. Around 1905, an enthusiastic potter, Frank Ferrel, approached Sam Weller (of Weller Pottery) with the idea for a new line of pottery. That line was Pinecone. The idea was shot down, and Frank soon left Weller to pursue his craft elsewhere. He ended up at the Peters and Reed Company in Zanesville, Ohio, where he earned the position of company President and helped turn the company into an increasingly successful producer of art pottery. In 1918, Frank Ferrel left Peters and Reed and joined Roseville to become their art director; a position he would retain for 36 years. REF: Sanford's Guide to Peters & Reed / The Zane Pottery Company by Martha and Steve Sanford as the #9 bowl in the highly-desirable Persian Ware finish.
