Item Details
Description
John F. Kennedy's sunglasses, worn during the President's trip to Florida, November 15-18, 1963, just a week prior to his assassination. These glasses come from Floyd M. Boring, Secret Service Agent to John F. Kennedy. Agent Boring accompanied the President on many of his trips, including the trip to Florida. The glasses are non-prescription, with dark green lens and a gold metallic frame. The glasses measure about 5'' across the front, the lens are 1.25'' tall, and the length of the arms is 5'' each. They are in good condition except for a small crack in the left lens, near the bridge.

President Kennedy had traveled to Florida in order to visit Cape Canaveral and review NASA's progress on creating a civilian space travel program and view the Merritt Island Launch area. He toured the facilities and received an explanation of the Saturn V rocket, which remains the tallest, heaviest, and most powerful rocket ever brought to operational status. After that visit he continued on to West Palm Beach where he visited his residence there and went to a mass at St. Ann's Church, the last mass he attended before he was killed. With his trip drawing to a close, he traveled on to Tampa, where he poignantly promised the crowd of 4,000 that had gathered there to see him, that he would "come back next year and make a longer speech." The date was Monday, November 18, 1963 - four days before the tragic events at Ft. Worth.

During this trip President Kennedy lost his favorite pair of sunglasses, and these drug-store bought glasses were probably a temporary replacement. Kennedy never carried his personal items with him, and so when he removed his glasses, he handed them to Agent Boring, who had accompanied him to Florida. The trip to Florida would be the last time the Secret Service Agent would ever see the President.

Includes letters of provenance from the family of Floyd M Boring and the Gettysburg Museum of History.
