Description
**Originally Listed at $250**
Northern/Eastern Europe, probably western Russia, Viking/Viking Rus, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A fantastic cast bronze brooch of the style sometimes known as "omega," a form of penannular brooch with large terminals. The open ring of the brooch is in spiral form, and terminates in two raised animal heads that are fairly abstract but may represent dragons. The pin has a tightly wrapped bronze coil around one end to attach it to the ring; the other end is a sharp point. Omega brooches have been found mainly in western Russia, especially at Staraya Ladoga, a major outpost near modern day St. Petersburg. Women there were buried with a combination of Scandinavian, Finnish, and Slavic jewelry, unsurprising in a place populated by traders. The style may have originated further south, with the Finno-Ugric people. Size: 2.55" L x 3" W (6.5 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
