Item Details
Description
LEE/ROSE NO. 70 CUP PLATE, colorless, plain rope rim, top only. Extremely rare. Midwestern United States, probably Benjamin Bakewell, Pittsburgh, PA. 1828-1835. 3 7/16" D.
Brilliant proof. Minor roughness to a slight fin under the rim, as made. Best possible example of a plate that is often cloudy.
Literature: Lee/Rose - American Glass Cup Plates, p. 85. Like Bourne - The William J. Elsholz collection, volume I, p. 9, lot 44. The McKearins - American Glass, pl. 177, fig. 73, "100 Best" clear.
Provenance: Collection of Jim Lawrence and Denver Smallwood, Chattanooga, TN.
Early Auctions, 7/3/83.
Ex-collection of Dr. Grace O. Doane.
Catalogue Note: Rose speculates that this is perhaps the first cup plate pressed "west of the mountains". An example from the Marble collection was included in the 1954 Corning exhibit (case 39, #682) and included by Rose in his new "100 Best" clear list.
Condition
Brilliant proof. Minor roughness to a slight fin under the rim, as made. Best possible example of a plate that is often cloudy.
