**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A festive pair of painted polychrome rattles, similar in form to Caribbean maracas or Rumba shakers, made from hollow gourds (possibly calabashes) attached to wooden handles. The shorter shaker displays multiple bands of brightly-colored bands; in front of them stand four men, in two pairs of two, with a vibrant green bird in-between. The taller shaker shows a zig-zagging vine with four men dressed in elaborate and vibrant clothing (presumably from the early Post-Conquest period), and all are flanked above and below with segmented areas of orange, red, blue, and green hues. Both produce marvelous percussive sounds when shaken in a rhythmic manner. Size of shorter shaker: 6" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 29.2 cm); Size of taller shaker: 4" W x 13.5" H (10.2 cm x 34.3 cm).
