**First Time At Auction**
Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A festive pair of rattles, similar in form to Caribbean maracas or Rumba shakers, made from hollow gourds (possibly calabashes) attached to wooden handles. The smaller shaker is painted with a message, "VIVA Vaquero ROGELIO" (Long Live Cowboy Rogelio) as well as a dancing couple, a pair of cowboys, and open-petaled flowers. The larger shaker is painted with the date 25 de Mayo 1970 (May 25, 1970) and four colorful standing figures (three male vaqueros and one female vaquera) wearing magnificent sombreros and costumes. Both produce marvelous percussive sounds when shook in a rhythmic manner. Size: 11.5" L x 6" in diameter (29.2 cm x 15.2 cm) Size: 10" L x 5.25" in diameter (25.4 cm x 13.3 cm)

Condition
Both with surface wear and paint losses commensurate with use and age. Age cracks to handle of smaller rattle. Nail protruding from upper end of small rattle.
