Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Classic to Early Post-Classic Period, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A stunning weathered tan chert cache find, knapped in open profile, with curled spike body, stylized pincers, nub-shaped legs, and a curved tail indicative of the long-revered scorpion. Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial uses for the Mayan people, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size: 4" L x 1.8" W (10.2 cm x 4.6 cm); size of custom frame: 8.25" L x 6.25" W (21 cm x 15.9 cm).

Provenance: ex-Roger Peterson collection; acquired from Dave Wanley collection
