Description
Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful stone head, carved from a reddish-orange sandstone, depicting the monkey god Hanuman. He has a smiling mouth and wide, human-like eyes set into a heart-shaped face. Hanuman is one of the central figures of the epic Ramayana, a devotee of Lord Rama. He is known for his strength and heroic initiative, as well as his admirable love for Rama. This may have been part of a larger statue that depicted the god as a human with a monkey head. Size: 3.5" L x 3" W x 3.4" H (8.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 8.6 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
